Compare appearance and material separately

For a yarn pom, look at the colors and their distribution. For faux fur, inspect the supplied material, pile and overall shape. Confirm composition separately; a photograph can't prove what the component is made from.

How will the diameter be measured?

A soft pom doesn't have a sharply defined edge. Agree on a measurement method and sample condition. Has it been fluffed, handled or compressed in a pack?

Use the same method for approval and later checks. A loose sample and a packed pom may appear different in size if measured differently.

Keep the component type, exact material, size, shape and color reference in the specification. Mark its position relative to the crown center or another named point.

Check the attachment from both sides

Don't assume a pom is removable because a different style uses a removable one. Inspect the actual attachment, including inside the hat, and agree how it will be checked in production. Record any intended removability and the care instructions supported for the combined product.

For children's products, provide the age group and destination early so applicable component and product requirements can be reviewed. Looking at the sample isn't a substitute for a required safety assessment.

Write separate records for the pom and the hat

The body yarn reference may not identify the pom material. Put the trim's own material, color, size and attachment description in the component record. For a mixed-color yarn pom, show the approved distribution with a sample or photo rather than listing only the color names.

For faux fur, describe the approved sample appearance and ask for the exact supplied material details. A description such as “fluffy” helps show the intended look, but does not settle composition, shape or care. Keep the component reference with the complete hat sample so a later replacement can be compared.

Check balance from the front and side

View the hat on the intended fitting form or wearer. Check the pom's position relative to the crown, how it sits when the hat is still, and whether the silhouette matches the reference. A top-view photo alone won't show an unwanted lean or a crown shape that changes beneath the trim.

If the pom appears off-center, photograph the attachment point and the complete hat. Distinguish a misplaced attachment from a trim whose visible shape is uneven. Ask whether the correction concerns the attachment position or the pom's shape.

For a double-pom design, identify the left and right positions in the drawing and compare them in the same wearing state. Don't use a photo taken at an angle as the only basis for judging symmetry.

Agree what the attachment review includes

Ask the supplier to explain the attachment and the checks proposed for the order. If a defined strength or other product-safety assessment is required, involve the appropriate testing provider and agree the scope. Use the agreed test results to support any safety claim.

When removable construction is offered and confirmed for a project, review how the parts connect and how the customer will use and care for them. Assuming a pom is removable can lead to incorrect care instructions if it is permanently attached.

Before approving a substitution, compare the replacement on the assembled hat. A similar trim supplied separately may differ in size, weight, shape or attachment.

Open the proposed pack

Inspect the hat after it's been packed in the intended way. Does the trim return to an acceptable shape? Does it need more space? The packing arrangement should preserve the presentation you approved.

Settle the care instructions before printing labels, particularly when the body and pom use different materials. The finished order needs instructions for that combination, not just for the yarn in the hat.
